BEIJING, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- A Russian-backed official in Ukraine said on Thursday that President Vladimir Putin's defense minister should commit suicide out of shame over the failure of the war in Ukraine, shocking the Russian elite.

After more than seven months of war in Ukraine, Russia's main war objective has yet to be achieved, and Putin has been forced to announce a partial campaign despite Russian military defeats on a number of battlefields in recent months.

Putin's Next Move In Ukraine

In a four-minute video message, Kirill Stremosov, the deputy leader of the Russian-incorporated Kherson region, followed suit, publicly accusing Moscow's "generals and ministers" of not understanding the issues before them.

"In fact, a lot of people: if the defense minister accepted this situation as an official, they would shoot themselves," Stremosov, 45, said. “But you know, a lot of people don't understand the word 'official'.

Such public insults by Putin's military leaders under the system are rare in Russia, but a series of battlefield setbacks in Ukraine have prompted some of Putin's allies to blame senior generals.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov and Yevgeny Prigozhin, founder of the Wagner Group mercenaries, insulted the generals, saying the army was full of narcissism and that senior officers should be fired and sent barefoot to atone for their sins.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, one of Putin's closest allies, was appointed in 2012. Their relationship was so close that the two often vacationed together in the forests and mountains of Shoigu's motherland.

Although this presents a dilemma for Putin at the crucial moment of the war, it is not clear whether the criticism is balanced: to sacrifice a close ally and admit the defeat of the army, or to preserve Shoigu and take the blame himself.

Despite Putin's massive investment, many Russian nationalists have repeatedly criticized Shoigu and his top generals for poor planning and poor logistics, disastrous tactics and failures in information warfare.

Last week, two retired generals who serve as State Duma members of Putin's United Russia party joined the chorus of critics, accusing the Defense Ministry of corruption and dishonesty.

In particular, critics accused Shoigu's ministry of losing key battles in the Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lyman and Kherson regions.

Stremosov compared his criticism to Moscow's "incompetent military leaders" and praised soldiers who fought to the death to defend their country.

“In addition to ministers, generals, corrupt robbers and other frauds, the Ministry of Defense consists of all heroes who sacrificed their lives for the defense of Russia.

"Let's say this: the Ministry of Defense consists not only of ministers, generals, corrupt guards and other frauds, but of all the heroes who have given their lives to date," Stremosov said.

"In Moscow, I think they will solve it quickly." Stremosov said. "We'll fix it, we'll get things sorted, trust me, everything will be under our control." It was destroyed in an explosion in the Crimea.

General Sergei Surovikin takes full command of the forces, which have been largely withdrawn by the Ukrainian counterattack.

The 18-kilometer Kert Bridge in Crimea is believed to have been damaged by explosives on a truck by Ukrainian special forces.

But the Russians, who said three people were killed in the explosion, said parts of the bridge had reopened.

Surovykin, 55, is Moscow's third senior military appointment in a week as Putin seeks to restart his "special military" operation, which saw a referendum on four Ukrainian regions rejected by the West as "honourable".

The change comes after two commanders of Russia's five military regions were fired this week as its forces suffered major setbacks in northeastern and southern Ukraine in recent weeks.

Surovikin is accused of leading Russian forces in Syria in bombings that destroyed much of the city of Aleppo. He was promoted to army general in 2021 and was in charge of troops in southern Ukraine this summer.

The European Union was condemned as being "responsible for actively supporting and implementing actions and policies that undermine and threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine."

According to U.S. media reports, Surovikin's appointment has been criticized by senior military officials and even the president's inner circle. According to the Washington Post, a person in the Kremlin confronted Putin directly about the Russian war machine's misfortune.

Meanwhile, British intelligence officials said "various operators in the Russian system" criticized the military leadership after the setbacks on the battlefield.

"Following Russia's sustained battlefield defeats over the past two weeks, increasingly diverse actors within the Russian system have come together to criticize the leadership of the Russian MoD," the protocol said.

Russia's Resources For Ukraine War Are Unlimited Despite 'issues', Says Vladimir Putin

Critics include Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, Wagner Group owner Yevgeny Prigogine, a state-sanctioned TV host and pop star, and the "Vocal Society of Ultra-Nationalist Military Bloggers."

"Kadyrov and Prigogine are seen as the unofficial heads of the 'pro-war' alliance, and their criticism is based on the country's greater will and willingness to step up."

“Both will probably gain some credit based on the significant deployment of Chechen and Wagner combat units.

“Criticism is focused on the military high command rather than key political leaders, but it represents a resentment against Russian institutions that is at least partially sustained and may be difficult to change.

The U.n. Security Council Won't Survive Russia's War In Ukraine

The Defense Ministry said Kyiv had captured and reused at least 440 Russian battle tanks and 650 armored vehicles. The captured Russian equipment itself inadvertently became one of the main military assets in the war against Ukraine.

Russia claims the territories of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Kherson as Russian, although they do not have military control over them, and the land has fallen to a new defensive line.

Shoigu And Gerasimov: Masters Of Putin's Wars

Russia has named a general known for firing on pro-democracy protesters in the 1990s as its first overall commander in the war in Ukraine, as the Kremlin struggles to stop a counteroffensive in Ukraine.

General Sergei Surovykin's appointment coincided with Vladimir Putin's humiliation on the same day, when an explosion at the Kerch Bridge blew part of the highway into the Kerch Strait and caused a major fire on the railway.

Surovikin, a senior commander who led Russia's military expedition into Syria in 2017, has been accused of using "controversial" tactics such as bombing anti-government fighters.

His appointment is the first for a general battlefield commander of Russian troops in Ukraine. Moscow may now understand that its forces are in danger of collapsing in Ukraine, and Kyiv's forces have advanced in four regions that "included" Putin.

Is Putin Sick

Surovykin, a former head of the Russian Aerospace Forces, was installed as head of the Southern Military Group in the summer, replacing General Alexander Dvornikov for a month.

It is seen as a boost to the Russian military's effectiveness in the war in eastern Ukraine, where communications and cooperation are poor, straining the Russian invasion force.

However, Surovikin also has a checkered history, including two prison terms for selling weapons and leading a military column against protesters during the 1991 coup. He also previously worked in Tajikistan and Chechnya.

"For more than 30 years, Surovikin's career has been marked by corruption and brutality," British intelligence officials wrote recently of Surovikin's promotion to head of the Southern Military Group.
